Choose and configure a connection

A connection is needed for a physical line. No adapter is required to inspect a saved trace.

Choose a transport

ModuleConnection
Modbus RTUSerial port
CANopenCAN adapter
Automotive VAGCAN adapter; J2534-specific behavior is covered separately

Connection steps

Before attaching an adapter to a working bus

When enabled, active adapter detection sends data to devices at startup and when you click Rescan. This data may reach the bus and generate unwanted traffic. If this is unacceptable, disable Active serial port scanning in Settings → Application → Startup beforehand.

  1. Select a profile and module. Change parameters while disconnected.
  2. Install the required packages and an adapter driver if needed.
  3. Open Settings → Connections → Transport. Type lists transports for the selected module and installed components.
  4. Select the device and line parameters. Rescan refreshes discovered devices.
  5. Connect to a line carrying traffic and open Tracer or Monitor.

The transport name in the status bar shows current measurements and opens line utilization and statistics. If the device or traffic is unavailable, see connection troubleshooting.
